In August 2024, the American Friends of Lafayette, along with historical societies, fraternal organizations, and its partners, including America 250, will begin to retrace the Marquis de Lafayette's footsteps of 1824 through the United States.
Lafayette returned to America as "The Nation's Guest," at the invitation of President Monroe, 48 years after serving as a major general in the Continental Army. He was welcomed as a hero and feted in all 24 states of the republic.
The Hudson River Valley Lafayette Farewell Tour Bicentennial Committee will recreate the receptions, dinners, parades, and balls, held in honor of Lafayette, on their anniversary dates, during the month of September 2024. The events will take place at West Point, and in Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Albany, Troy, Beacon, and possibly other sites.
The Committee welcomes new members who have a passion for history and education, and wish to be a part of the Bicentennial planning process. Interested individuals may contact Anne Putko at putkoa@aol.com.
